Cancellations & New Beginnings

In light of the spread of the COVID-19 virus I have decided to suspend my massage therapy practice, through April 2020.

The health and well-being of my clients are essential to me. I have a great sense of responsibility to keep them safe. Even though there are no diagnosed cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia yet, we are being told it is not a matter of if the virus will come to us, but when. 'Social distancing' is recommended to prevent of the spread of the virus since transmission can occur even when people are not exhibiting symptoms. But as we all know, massage therapy is the very opposite of social distancing!

Medical experts say the virus is easily transmitted, more so than the flu. I have been diligent about keeping my treatment room sterilized and safe for my clients. But when someone is receiving a massage and they cough or sneeze, they hardly ever have time to cover their mouths. It's not their fault, it's just the nature of being on the massage table. Occasionally a client coughs and turns their head in the direction they think is away from me, but if they have their eyes closed, sometimes it is right in my direction, and they didn't know.

Also, there are still people who are not taking extra precautions; they say once Nova Scotia has some confirmed cases, then they will start taking it more seriously. That's their prerogative, but it means as their massage therapist I could be unknowingly become a vector for the virus and pass it on to my other clients. I don't trust we have a clear idea of how far-reaching the coronavirus is in our community. Under those circumstances, I don't feel confident I can provide a safe space for my clients.

I will keep monitoring the situation and will return to my practice once it feels safe for close contact again.

In the meantime, I have two new services to offer, both available online. You can read more below. You can book in for either one of these services exactly as you book in for a massage. When you go to my regular online booking system now, you will see that the services have changed - or I can book for you, via text.

Take good care of your beautiful selves, body and soul. I look forward to seeing you again in the spring.

LIFE COACHING

It seems there are times in life when the problems & obstacles that challenge us don't require the depth of psychotherapy sessions. At times, we could be helped by some authentic listening, steady guidance and a good plan.

Here's a good article from Oprah magazine that answers the question: What Exactly Is a Life Coach?

I have begun the process of becoming a certified life coach. Starting this Tuesday, I will offer online coaching sessions via FaceTime or Skype. I am in the process of setting up a new web site. The appointments will happen in one hour increments. My availability will be exactly the same as my massage work hours.

The fee will be a modest price since I'm still a student - and since we are in financially precarious times and I want to make this service available - of $30 per hour. Since I am not certified yet, it won't be covered by health plans.

I don't have clients as a Life Coach yet, but as a way to give you a feel for my character, here are a couple of testimonials from people who know me:

“Jessica Marsh has been my go-to person when I need a second option, advice on next steps and support on just about anything. I appreciate her kindness and unwavering level head, and her total willingness to share her many years of experience and wisdom when it is truly needed. As a coach you can expect steady guidance and a valuable perspective on how to navigate and see self and others in complex times.”

“I’ve known Jessica Marsh for approximately ten years. I don’t trust easily, but I knew she was someone I could relax around, someone I could depend on to always do the right thing. Throughout the next ten years I had many massage treatments and consults with Jessica. I can honestly say she is like no other person I have ever met before. What will make her a great life coach is that she has a unique and beautiful outlook on life. I’ve benefited from and enjoyed every moment I’ve spent with her.”

Appointments can be booked though my regular online booking system.

TREAT YOURSELF

For many years I have facilitated a group workshop called "Treat Yourself', in which I show people massage techniques to use on their own bodies. We do a "Simon says" kind of routine to start with, a self-treatment to wake your body up. Participants then also learn how to treat common areas of stress in their own bodies - feet, hips, back and neck - using trigger point release, myofascial release, classic massage and self treatment with a lacrosse ball. Then there's a Q& A time for advice about any other areas of concern you may have. Participants remain fully clothed, with bare or sock feet. Work is done on the floor on a yoga mat and/or seated.

I am now offering a one-on-one version of 'Treat Yourself' - private massage therapy instruction in which you will learn techniques to treat your own body, decrease stress and/or treat areas of specific concern in your body. Appointments are only available online, via FaceTime or Skype. You're welcome to invite a friend or two to participate - partner, children, family member or housemate.

The fee is $90 for a one hour lesson, and a receipt will be issued.

Testimonials from 'Treat Yourself' Workshop Participants:

“I found out about muscles I didn’t even know I had! Jessica is a very good instructor. Even though I had no previous knowledge about massage, I understood everything she taught us. I felt great afterwards. I went into the workshop with leg and joint pain and left with none. I learned how sore my muscles were and I also learned how much I can do about it.” ~ Treat Yourself participants from the Dartmouth North Community Centre

“People really liked the Treat Yourself workshop Jessica brought to the health group at the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS), because they learned how to take care of themselves and be less in need of others. In the following meeting, most of the participants remembered what Jessica taught and taught those techniques to the new members of the group. These are good skills for ISANS clients to have, especially when they are living with financial constraints and can’t afford things like massage or physiotherapy.” ~ Carmen Celina Moncayo, Community Wellness Coordinator

"Jessica delivered a series of Treat Yourself workshops for us who are seniors living on limited budgets and do not have easy access to massage therapy. Her sessions were wonderful, enjoyable, full of excellent information, exercises and suggestions on how to use ordinary objects (like rolling pins, tennis balls, elbows and fists) to release tight spots in our body. Not only did she provide us with a useful learning experience but she also brought us the gift of laughter, which in my book is another important healing tool." ~ Soledad Gonzalez
